The third instalment of the “Hidden Weapons” series takes a look at a knife that can be hidden as easily as a credit card and feels much the same in a pocket, the Card Sharp. Razor sharp and easy to miss on a search, the card sharp is definitely something every Cop and all public safety personnel should be aware of. If they have a wallet, they may well have a knife!

As a police field training officer (FTO) it is easy to teach people to search for weapons and contraband in obvious places. the hard part is to get me cops and security guards to start to think a little bit like a criminal.

While most people would never think to hide a fixed blade knife in their wallet, buy a comb, lipstick, or pen with a blade concealed within it, most career criminals seek out new and unusual methods to conceal weapons, cuff keys, and narcotics on their persons.

Here we are concentrating on weapons. Specifically weapons that can be hidden from a cursory "Pat down" or "frisk" and are often missed in full custodial searches of arrestees.

The threat posed by these types of weapons is significant. Often even experienced officers will let their guard down after searching a subject on the street or a prisoner/arrestee.

Here is where street officers of every stripe would be wise to take a lesson from our brothers turning keys for a living. They know better than anyone that if a person with Ill intent wants to get and carry a weapon they will. Correctional Officers will tell you that even if you just cavity searched a person you should never let your guard down around them. Ask any jailer and they will tell you stories about unpleasant "surprises" they have had at work. Many of those surprises will invariably involve ingenious methods and craftsmanship used to hide knives and other sharp objects used to attack other prisoners and the prison staff.

While the environment we are talking about today is far removed from a prison, the key populace that is a threat to us is the same, career criminals.

To combat this threat we have to learn the CO method of searching thoroughly, separating the person from their property and inspecting every item through a suspicious lens whenever it is legal to do so.

I seriously considered naming this series "how to search a suspect" or "how to do a custodial search" But, as you can tell there is so much more to the issue than overlapping quadrants and legal requirements. We have to have the mindset to find what no one wants us to find and be ready to deal with the unexpected. We have to be a "COP" no matter what title is written on our uniform.
